Until the late 13th Century, the sword was the first choice of knights and armor bearers. However, with the introduction of plate armor, the sword lost its dominant position because its design was not suitable for penetrating armor plating. This led to the development of the war hammer which was distinguished by a long spike on one side and a massive hammer face on the other. The hammer face could be used to severely dent armament, while the spike penetrated the armor of those days with ease.
